How
to obtain the lowest airline fares
Tip #1 Be Flexible if you can
To get the
best fare, try to be flexible with the dates you need to travel.
Plan the rest of your trip around the best days to fly if possible.
Airlines offer
their best fares to vacationers... Vacationers tend to be the
most frugal buyers.
If the airlines
charge too much, the vacationer will simply drive or not go at
all.
However, they
know that a business traveler must often leave at the last minute.
The business traveler often does not have the same flexibility
as a vacation traveler to change around the travel dates, or select
a flight 21 days or more in advance. Therefore the airlines have
a more "captive" market with the business traveler and
often can garner more money for a ticket.
Naturally
the airlines assume that businesses have much more money to throw
around than the poor vacationer.
That's why
you'll usually find your best fares at least 21 days in the future.
Often there are good 14 and even 7 day in advance airline fares
available too...
For similar
reasons you will often find better fares if you stay over on a
Saturday night, and fly mid week. The reasoning is simple. The
airlines have more business travelers flying on Monday and Friday.
Check a few days on each side of the day you want to travel if
you can.
If you plan
to travel on the 15th of the month for example, check for flights
on the 12th, 13th, 14th, 16th, 17th and so on. You'll often save
by flying other days if you can.
Also look
for the best airline fares on a Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday
if you can. Often these are the least crowded days to fly, so
the lower priced seats may not be as sold out as they might be
on a heavier traffic flying day.
